The Guitar Of Furry Lewis, at Woolworths
Walter Furry Lewis (1893-1981) was born in Greenwood, Mississippi, but live virtually his entire adult life in Memphis, Tennessee. He recorded 25 sides between April of 1927 and September of 1929, and several albums in the 1960s for Folkways, Prestige, and other labels after being rediscovered by Country Blues researcher Samuel Charters. A period spent performing with a medicine show as a young man provided Furry with on-the-job training as a musician and entertainer. Furry was a study in contrasts - he was a stellar showman whose gift for storytelling never altogether made you forget how superb his guitar playing was. He was equally comfortable working in broad strokes or intricate detail, and everything he played shared a rhythmic strength and fluidity of phrasing that was all his own. Furry Lewis was also one of the most improvisatory of bluesmen. He was a two finger picker with an unusual varied repertoire of right hand attacks. In open tunings, he favoured big brush strokes with his thumb on the upbeats, while when playing in E, he adopted a very complex, detail-oriented approach. A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. This includes all the lyrics to the songs as well as transcriptions of the guitar playing. Furry Lewis's original 1920s recordings of all the tunes are included. At the Dorset Steam Fair a vast collection of pre and post war road haulage and carriage vehicles, most beautifully restored, were gathered and put through their paces in the main ring for visitors to once more admire. Famous Names n display were AEC, Albion, Atkinson, Austin, Bedford, Commer, Dodge, E.R.F., Ford, Jowett, Land Rover, Leyland, Morris and Scammell, including a short display by the three wheel chanical Horses.' Saurer. Also, still in perfect working order, was the first ever E.R.F lorry to come off the production line. This was the 1933 C14. The commentary is given by John Collins whose knowledge on the subject is second to none. So we hope you enjoy this brief visit back into nostalgia as you watch a little of British transport history as it drives past.
