John Tavener - Beyond The Veil, at Woolworths
This extended South Bank Show film, first shown in 1998, pays tribute to the astonishing and original composer, John Tavener, who came to worldwide recognition when his Song for Athene was sung at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. Many were touched by the spiritual, almost hypnotic calm of his timeless music. This followed on from the success of his stunning cello concerto The Protecting Veil, for which he received the 1992 Gramophone Award. Melvyn Bragg talks to Tavener about his early influences, his life in 1960's 'swinging London', and the religious inspiration behind his works. He converted to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1977, feeling that it offered the only way forward. He believes his music is direct and spontaneous inspiration from God. The programme was filmed in England and in Greece, where Tavener spends time with his family.
