Shyamlal suggests that they should try and find a suitable bride for the boisterous young man, as he would surely settle down after marriage. Marriage, however, is not something which fits in with Rajib's plans and he manages to quickly dispose of the girls from whom he was to select his life's mate. When the Rani Ma insists that he must agree to marry he takes the decision to go away, and remain away till such a time as his mother agrees to change her mind. In the company of his great friend, Chandra, Rajib goes to Kashmir, where he owns a bungalow and an estate. The bungalow at Kashmir has been left in the charge of Bholaram for many years, and has rarely been visited by members of the family. The crafty Bholaram has taken full advantage of the situation by converting the bungalow into a hotel, which was quite popular with young visitors to Kashmir. Thus Rajib found himself a stranger in his own house, and Bholaram made matters worse for him by telling the guests that Rajib was merely a mad man who suffered from hallucinations which made him believe he owned the place. The other hotel guests agreed to pamper Rajib. Into Rajib's life stepped Champa, the beautiful Kashmiri flower girl who won his heart. She was the only daughter of a blind man, Dinu and made both ends meet by selling flowers to the tourists who flocked to the colourful valley. As Rajib's romance with Champa blossomed, he was made to an ugly enemy of Mohan, a local suiter for Champa's hand, and who was doing everything in his power to persuade the blind Dinu to give Champa to him in marriage. All at once Rajib and Champa find themselves in the midst of events so stunning that their dream world seemed sure to be destroyed. The story hence forward takes most unexpected twists and turns, and moves on to a breathtaking climax brilliantly presented by the colour cameras. What transpires is best enjoyed on the screen.

The Lost World (Silent), at Woolworths
Paleontologist Professor George Challenger claims that dinosaurs are to be found in certain parts of the Amazon and is sponsored by a newspaper to journey to the region in order to prove his theories. His expedition includes Paula White, the daughter of a fellow explorer who was lost on the plateau on a previous trip, big game hunter Sir John Roxon, Professor Summerlee, who wants to catalogue the differing life-forms he is expecting to encounter, and Edward Malone, along for the ride in order to impress a girlfriend. Unaware that their arrival and efforts are being closely watched by an ape man, the expedition encounters terrifying creatures one after another, culminating with them being trapped on top of the plateau after being chased by hundreds of dinosaurs and a menacing ape man. Written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1912, the film was originally made in 1925 by First National Pictures and was a box office smash. The arrival of 'talkies' spelt the end of The Lost World and it was withdrawn from distribution in 1929, with all known prints and negatives being destroyed to pave the way for a possible sound version. In the event, none was made, although the original would prove the inspiration for such other epics as King Kong and Jurassic Park. Although better known for the creation of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's own favourite was George Challenger, who appeared in two further novels. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was also proud of the film (in which he appears), taking test reels of the dinosaur footage created by Willis O'Brien to speaking engagements and passing them off as real proof of the existence of dinosaurs!

Alexander Nevsky, at Woolworths
Sergei Eisenstein's classic war movie has an incredible score by Prokofiev. An exceptional patriotic war movie that follows the story of prince Alaxander Nevsky from the apparent position of humble fisherman to a war hero leading his country in a successful campaign against invaders from Germany. It is 1242 and the story begins with Russia constantly being invaded by Mongol raiders, in their endless pursuit of land and treasure, when news comes of an impending attack by Teutonic knights. Some of the Russian hierarchy try, and succeed, in forming a non-aggression pact. These leaders are regarded as cowards and traitors by the people and Alexander is asked to lead the proletariat into battle against the new invaders. Alexander succeeds in inspiring the masses into mobilizing and arming themselves. The Teutons gain a number of victories including the capture of the city of Pskov and inflict many acts of barbarism on the people there. Alexander then leads the Russian people's army, which includes many young women, into battle where, contrary to conventional imagery, the white robes of the Teutons are associated with cruelty and death while heroism and patriotism is symbolised by the black robes of the Russian warriors. The vast armies of epic proportions and Elisenstein uses the dramatic effects of wide flat lands and frozen lakes with huge areas of sky to enhance the amazing battle sequences. The decisive battle is fought in the spring on the frozen lake and after a long exchange, which is one of the greatest battle scenes in cinematic history, the Germans retreat and are thwarted by the ice breaking; the lake swallowing them up. The victorious Alexander is hailed as a hero on his return and the victors celebrate their success including the conclusion of a minor sub-plot featuring two soldiers who try to woo a young woman - who also turns out to be a warrior.
